Dear all,  please find below my latest YouTube update video! A little overdue, but essentially a round-up of the filming of British  psychological horror film Beautiful that took place towards the end of August 2012. Apologies for my unkempt appearance. Enjoy!

August Update

Back behind (or indeed to the side of) the camera.
I'm tired though that's not to say that I'm not getting any satisfaction from feeling tired. It's been a busy few days. I have returned to filming after a break of several months ( I say break but scheduled filming in June was cancelled after a member of our team became unwell.)

The concentration of filming has been partly spurred on by my friend's decision to sell his house; a space we've been using as as a set for almost a year.

In the past four days I have spent three filming and another shopping for a suitable outfit for the character of Lizzy, along with the actress who plays her- also called Lizzy (I wrote the character with her in mind).

I am beginning to understand how difficult juggling work life and a creative life can be- I have work deadlines I feel I'm neglecting but I also haven't been especially organised in arranging filming; my sloppiness leading to a few heated texts from people involved in the film!

Rafi and Lizzy onset.
That is not to say I have regrets about making the film- I still feel hugely excited when looking at the footage after a day's filming; 'I made that!'

But I think, and this is something slowly dawning on me as a 30-something, that ambitions and goals come with sacrifice and require investment. And even things that are for pleasure, a hobby or interest, can feel like very hard work at times. I'm just grateful I can share that work with people I have around me. I have a strong fear, however, that they will tire of this project, and it will be left incomplete. My own neurosis I'm sure- they certainly have demonstrated a lot of dedication and patience.

Dress hunting for Lizzy's character- think we've found the one!
I think one thing that will help me feel that spark again will be a change of scene. James has done a fantastic job of turning his front room into Lizzy's bedroom, but it is a small space. We 'cheat' to give the illusion of space and to get all the camera angles needed. This can be physically tiring, and, as I've been doing a lot of it recently, it can feel laborious. It makes me envy those working in studios- where sets only have three walls and plenty of space to manoeuvre!

Amy, Debra and Lee- on our way to filming.
Some new filming locations will shake things up I hope. I'm trying not to think too far ahead- one step at a time, otherwise I'm afraid I'll feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of things yet to do. Examples include learning how to use after effects, securing more locations, identifying contacts for music, physical effects and make-up. I know my current approach is focused on the here-and-now, the very next thing, sometimes at the expense of being a better planner.

Another source of strength is the hope that these scenes, sometimes filmed over gaps of months, will come together to form a coherent whole. Something with flow; a beginning middle and end. Not just separate scenes stuck together clumsily but, rather, a real story.

Behind-the-scenes video for making of 'Beautiful.'

Above you can see my first behind-the-scenes video for the making of my independent British horror film Beautiful. After a gap of almost six months since last filming I've been pushed into action by the news that my friend James is selling his house soon, so in the space of just over a week I have scheduled five filming days to ensure that the most important scenes using James' home are filmed. It feels fantastic to be behind the camera, but also quite exhausting!

I hope you enjoy the video, and that it communicates some of what it is like to film a low-budget horror!

A Location Scouting Video on YouTube!

The vast majority of filming done so far on my independent British horror film 'Beautiful' has been of interior scenes. In this video I wander around some woodland in the South-East of England as a potential location for future filming. Talk about contrast! I'm both very nervous about filming outside (what if it rains, how do I light scenes?!) and also hugely excited! I think it'll do the cast and crew good to get outdoors a little also, rather than cooped up in tiny rooms trying to create the illusion of space.  Enjoy the video!

New YouTube video up!

A blooper from the March filming dates of my horror film 'Beautiful.' The dangers of eating bombay mix just before shouting 'action!'

The Dreadfulness of Fancy Dress Shops.

A very quick update for you all about the woes of seeking costumes. Yesterday I was looking for a monk's outfit, quite an important aspect of the film, and certainly something I would hope has visual impact on screen.

Here are photos of the 'offerings' I came across. I could let you be the judge, but let me save you the effort. They are dreadful. How you can charge someone £25 a night for this synthetic weave stuff is beyond me- it's like they were made from recycled tights or something.

Nope, it seems getting the outfit tailor made is the only way to go. More expense, but I'm hoping (perhaps naively) that making an effort with these details will help add a sense of polish to my ultra- low budget horror film. If it looks good it'll be worth it!

On a completely mature note, why are fancy dress shop owners so miserable? You'd think they'd be all about the fun, right ?
